Diagnosis & Treatment

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure performed on the eyelid, usually to remove excess skin. The operation can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelid.

Apart from improving the appearance of the area, in the upper lid a blepharoplasty can improve vision if the eye is obscured by excess skin of the upper lid. The excess skin can also cause tearing of the eye, as well as cause the lashes to turn into the eye resulting in pain and ulceration.

In both upper and lower lids, a blepharoplasty is often combined with removal of fat, which can give the appearance of puffiness around the eyes.

Dr Stelmach's surgery maintains the normal function of the eye and of the eyelids, while aiming to provide the patient with an excellent functional and cosmetic result.

The operation is performed in hospital as a day case, usually under local anaesthetic with intravenous sedation (twilight anaesthetic).
